Billy Lane Controversy: Details on his drunk-driving fatal crash
On September 5, 2006, while driving a promotional 2006 Dodge Ram on Florida Route A1A, Lane crossed a double yellow line to pass two cars, striking head-on the 1983 Yamaha motorcycle ridden by Gerald Morelock who worked as a park ranger at Sebastian Inlet State Park, in the oncoming lane. Lane’s driving license had been revoked in a previous incident in North Carolina. Morelock was critically injured and proclaimed dead at the site.
Lane surrendered to police on September 21 in connection with the deadly incident, where he faced charges of driving under the influence and manslaughter. On the day he was charged with a second-degree felony, he submitted a “not guilty” plea.
The incident elicited a wide range of reactions from the motorcycling community, with some advocating for harsher penalties because Lane was a motorcycle rider himself, while others called for leniency for the same reason.
Lane was sentenced to 6 years in jail, 3 years of supervised probation, and the loss of his driver’s license for life on August 14, 2009, after pleading no contest to one count of vehicular homicide. As per the record in the Florida Department of Corrections, he was at the Orlando Transition Center (male facility) as of February 24, 2013, and was released on September 18, 2014.
