Buterin was placed in a bright class in grade three of an elementary school in Canada, and he was drawn to mathematics, programming, and economics. He then went to the Abelard School, a Toronto-based private high school. At the age of 17, he learned about Bitcoin from his father.

He completed advanced classes and worked as a research assistant for cryptographer Ian Goldberg while attending the University of Waterloo.
