He is the father of two children. Joseph Budden III, also known as Trey was his oldest son and was born on May 11, 2001, when he was 20 years old. The Hudson County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey issued a warrant for him in 2010 for unpaid child support.

Lexington, his second kid, was born on December 15, 2017, to Cyn Santana who is an urban model and video vixen. In December 2018, the couple became engaged after he proposed in New York during a live broadcast of The Joe Budden Podcast. Since then, the pair have called off their engagement.

On August 31, 1980, in Spanish Harlem, New York City, he was born to Joseph Budden and Fay Southerland. He relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey, with his mother and older brother when he was thirteen years old, and attended Lincoln High School. He was a troublesome adolescent who was sent to Laurinburg Institute, a North Carolina boarding school, where he began to perfect his rapping skills. He began doing narcotics after returning to Jersey, acquiring an addiction to angel dust.

He willingly entered rehab on July 3, 1997, after an intense fight with his mother, in exchange for being permitted to attend his senior prom. He did not complete his education and, by the age of 20, had fathered a child with an older lady. He began to take music more seriously after the birth of his kid.
