Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon as her birth name. She was born on February 21, 1933. She is a native of Tryon, North Carolina.

She was one of the eight children of Mary Kate and Rev. John Devan Waymon with other seven siblings. She played the piano from a very early age. She used to perform often at the church.

When she was 12 years old, she performed in a classical recital. As she belongs to an African family, she said that her parents were forced to move from the front row to make room for white people in the show. Then, Nina refused to perform. She did not perform until her parents were moved back to their rightful spot.

Relationship And Personal life

Nina was married to Donald Ross previously from 1958 to 1960. Again, She got married to Andrew Stroud who was a New York detective for ten years from 1961 to 1971. They have a daughter named Lisa.

Lisa is now known as Lisa Simone Kelly who has grown up to be a singer and actress. She is also executive producer for the documentary "What Happened, Miss Simone?".

Nina was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 80s. At that time, she was also known for aggressive outbursts and a hot temper. She has accused a record company executive of stealing her royalties in 1985. She also tried to kill him by firing a gun at him.

Nina was sentenced to eight months in jail for shooting her neighbour's son with an air gun. However, the sentence was suspended later after she underwent psychiatric treatment.

Nina died at her home in Carry-le-Rouet, France, at the age of 70 on April 21, 2003. Sadly, she spent the last few years of her life-fighting breast cancer. It was also officially stated that she was dead in her sleep.

Career

Nina started her job as an accompanist at Arlene Smith's vocal studio. She also performed at the "Midtown Bar & Grill in Atlantic City". She was insisted by the owner to sing in addition to playing the piano. Then, She gave herself the stage name "Nina Simone" in 1954.

Simone released more than 40 albums. Some of her albums are "Little Girl Blue", "Forbidden Fruit", "I Put a Spell on You", "To Love Somebody", and "Black Gold". She was also known for the singles "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Trouble in Mind," "I Put a Spell on You," "To Love Somebody," "Ain't Got No, I Got Life," "My Baby Just Cares for Me," and "Feeling Good".

She was also known for her rendition of "I Loves You, Porgy" from the opera "Porgy and Bess". She has also shown her skills in "I Put a Spell on You" in 1992.
