He was born in Marshall, Minnesota, to Lutheran minister Carleton Edward Zahn and bookshop clerk Zelda Clair Zahn, who subsequently became a YMCA executive. His father is of German and Swedish origin, while his mother is German.
Zahn spent most of his childhood in Mankato, Minnesota, where he attended Kennedy Elementary School, before moving to the Minneapolis suburbs for high school, where he participated in school plays and won two Minnesota state speech championships. In 1986, he graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School intending to join the United States Marine Corps.
After watching the original West End version of Les Misérables, Zahn dropped out of Gustavus Adolphus College after one semester. He went on to Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts.
