He had amassed a staggering net worth of $100 million which represents his outstanding work as a designer, entrepreneur, and DJ. His base salary from LVMH was alleged $10 million per year when he joined Louis Vuitton in 2018. He sold a majority stake in his label Off-White to LVMH in July 2021 earning substantial income through it.

At the beginning of his career, in 2009, he interned at Fendi in the same class as rapper Kanye West after graduating from university. He got the attention of the Louis Vuitton CEO while working with the rapper and designer. Later that year, he and West’s creative collaborator, Don C, opened the RSVP Gallery, a retail business in Chicago. West hired him as the creative director of his creative agency, Donda, a year later.

Pyrex Vision, his first startup, was founded in 2012. He bought deadstock Ralph Lauren clothes for $40, screen-printed graphics on them, and sold them for upwards of $550. He shut down the company a year later because he didn’t want it to be a commercial venture, but rather an artistic exercise.

With the high-end streetwear brand Off-White, he created his first fashion house and second firm overall in 2013. Beginning in Paris, the brand leader drew considerable notice to his clothing, which he subsequently expanded to China, Tokyo, Japan, and the United States.

In 2014, he introduced the company’s women’s wear line, which debuted during Paris Fashion Week. He then opened his first Off-White concept store in Tokyo, Japan, where he also created the company’s furniture division, Grey Area.

Off-White had surpassed Gucci as the trendiest label in the world at the end of 2018, according to a sales and consumer mood barometer. He also collaborated with IKEA, a Swedish furniture manufacturer, to create furniture for apartments and houses, as well as tote bags with the word sculpture engraved in the center.

He was named artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear ready-to-wear line on March 25, 2018, making him the first African-American to manage the brand’s menswear line. He debuted his first Louis Vuitton collection in the Palais-Royal gardens in Paris during the 2018 Men’s Fashion Week.

His passion for music inspired him to start DJing when he was in his teens. He DJed at house parties throughout high school and college. In January 2018, he released his first track, “Orvnge”, alongside German DJ/producer Boys Noize. He was chosen to a DJ residency at Wynn Las Vegas’s XS Nightclub in June 2019.

In 2021, he created “Imaginary Radio” c/o Virgil Abloh, a new monthly two-hour internet radio show on Worldwide FM. He previously had a show named “TELEVISED RADIO” on Apple Music 1.

He was married to Shannon Sundberg whom he met in high school. They married in 2009 and have two children and the family lived in Chicago. He belonged to the Ewe ethnic group of Ghana’s Volta region.

He was diagnosed with cardiac angiosarcoma, a kind of cancer, in 2019, but he chose to conceal the news to himself. He died in Chicago on November 28, 2021, at the age of 41.

Virgil Abloh Early Life, Family, and Education

He was born in Rockford, Illinois, to his Ghanaian immigrant parents. His mother was a seamstress, and his father worked as a painter. He learned to sew from his mother.

He grew up in Rockford and attended Boylan Catholic High School, where he graduated in 1998. Furthermore, he earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2002. He earned a Master of Architecture degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2006.

When he was at IIT, a building built by architect Rem Koolhaas was under construction on campus, which sparked his interest in fashion and designing. While working on his designs in a Chicago print studio, he met famed singer Kanye West.
