The Star Wars franchise is no stranger to mysteries surrounding the fate of lightsabers. There are still some mysteries surrounding the blue Skywalker lightsaber, but one other lightsaber whose fate remains unknown to many fans is the iconic green lightsaber of the Jedi Grandmaster himself, Yoda.
The green-bladed, shoto lightsaber, which was rarely ever wielded by Yoda is one of the most recognisable lightsabers from the franchise and a Star Wars fan-favourite. But what really happened to the iconic Yoda lightsaber after the Jedi Master lost it in the Revenge of the Sith? Read on to find out.
How Yoda Lost His Lightsaber?
As a young Jedi Padawan, Yoda built his green shoto lightsaber with a kyber crystal he got from Ilum. Yoda was quite formidable with his lightsaber, even though he rarely ever wielded it (the Jedi Master preferred to resolve conflict in more subtle ways). It was this lightsaber that he used in his confrontation with Count Dooku during the first battle of the Clone Wars. The saber also served him well on several occasions.
However, during his duel with the Sith Dark Lord, Darth Sidious (Palpatine), in the Revenge of the Sith, Yoda gets his lightsaber knocked out of his hand by Force lightning. The lightsaber falls into the depths of the Senate, and Yoda is unable to recover it as he had to flee from the bolts of energy being thrown at him.
While speaking to the citizens of Coruscant about the Jedi Order’s end (after the rise of the new Galactic Empire), Grand Vizier Mas Amedda burned a collection of lightsabers which included Yoda’s green lightsaber. While burning, the kyber crystals from these lightsabers caused a large explosion of energy, ultimately causing Yoda to lose his treasured lightsaber forever.
However, the Book of Boba Fett shows Luke Skywalker (Yoda’s former apprentice) presenting Grogu with Yoda’s lightsaber. This unexpected gift, of course, raised a lot of questions for Star Wars fans. What if Yoda’s lightsaber wasn’t actually destroyed? Did the Jedi Grandmaster have a second lightsaber? And if he did, how did Luke come to be in possession of it?
Yoda’s Second Lightsaber: How Did Luke End Up With It?
Following the loss of his lightsaber in the Revenge of the Sith, Yoda chose not to wield another lightsaber as part of his penance for not being able to stop the fall of the Jedi Order.
However, at the end of episode 6 of the Book of Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker can be seen asking Grogu (Baby Yoda) to make one of two choices, picking Yoda’s old lightsaber and becoming a Jedi or choosing the Beskar armour made by Din Djarin (the Mandalorian) and embracing the path of the Mandalorian foundling. While this scene does set up a likely reunion between Grogu and the Mandalorian, what many fans were really wondering was how Luke came to be in possession of Yoda’s green lightsaber.
Well, the theory backed up by the Star Wars canon was that after the events of the Revenge of the Sith, Yoda did, in fact, build a second lightsaber which he kept hidden inside a box in his hut on Dagobah. Following his death in 4 ABY, Luke, who was his last Jedi apprentice, took possession of the lightsaber.
Conclusion
Yoda’s green shoto lightsaber was one of the most iconic lightsabers used in the Star Wars franchise. It was a weapon that served the Jedi Grandmaster well and showed his skills as a formidable duelist. After losing the lightsaber in a duel with Darth Sidious and the subsequent fall of the Jedi Order, Yoda exiles himself to Dagobah where he kept another lightsaber hidden in his hut (although he didn’t wield it). Following his death, the lightsaber ends up in the possession of Luke Skywalker, who later went on to present it to Grogu (baby yoda).
